The Rockefeller University is a world-renowned private graduate-only university in New York City. It focuses primarily on the biological and medical sciences and provides doctoral and postdoctoral education. It's one of the oldest biomedical research institutes in the United States.
The intranet portal and departmental home pages provide important information that is critical to the day-to-day operations of the university. They are accessed daily by all members of the university community, including researchers, students, and staff members. Just like the public home page, Inside RU is an essential component of the university's web presence. In order to provide the most up-to-date information, all departments and resource centers need their own websites on the intranet. The intranet also houses many web-based applications, such as the user management system, the classifieds, and various booking systems, etc.
The goal of this project is to redesign and upgrade the templates for these Inside RU websites, to optimize the user experience, improve the functionality, and modernize the UI design.
As the lead designer of this project, my tasks include
- Comb through the entire repository of the old web pages, understand the users' need, and provide insights and suggestions for the structure and the content
- Create a modernized visual style in connection with the look of the university's newly updated public website, and produce style guides for the intranet templates
- Use responsive web design technique to create a modularized, customizable template that's flexible for different usage scenarios
- Create layouts using various design tools, assist front-end developers in buiding the HTML and CSS files
- Optimize and reiterate according to the feedback from the users, further customize the design according to the requests from departments and resource centers within the university
This redesign greatly improves the overall experience of the intranet usage. Since it's gone live, it's welcomed by the university community and our team have received positive feedbacks and many new requests for installations and further customizations. With its customizable color themes and modules, it's very effective in distinguishing each site and guiding the navigation, while maintaining the overall consistent style.
洛克菲勒大学（The Rockefeller University），是一所位于美国纽约的世界顶尖的生物医学教育研究中心。截至2022年3月，洛克菲勒大学在生理学或医学、化学领域拥有26位诺贝尔奖获得者，是世界上在生物医学领域拥有诺贝尔奖最多的机构之一。
大学的内网门户及各部门的内网网页需要为大学内部人员（教职员、科研人员、学生）提供和学校运转、科研、生活、公共活动等息息相关的服务和信息，和公共主页一同，是整个校园互联网生态的重要组成部分。其中内网门户作为整个内网的入口，承担了搜索、引导、分流、通知等重要功能。学校内部各部门都需要设立自己的内网主页，以便随时提供最新的资讯和服务。同时内网还包含大量的基于网页的app，如用户管理，分类广告，各种预约申请类服务等等。
项目目标：
重新设计制作内网门户及页面模版，优化界面和用户体验，丰富功能，更新并统一视觉风格。
职责：
作为整个项目的Design Lead参与项目全流程。
- 梳理原本庞杂的内网结构，了解用户需求，去芜存菁，提出门户功能及内容的优化方案。
- 把控整体视觉风格，和公网设计做联结，制定各要素的设计规范。
- 提出了模块化的模版设计方案，并使用响应式设计，使其可以灵活应用于各场景。
- 使用各种设计软件制作layout，协助前端开发，制作HTML和CSS文档。
- 持续跟据用户反馈不断优化设计，并按照部门需求制定众多个性化方案。
该项目上线以来收获来自学校内部的各部门人员好评，极大的提升了内网为整个学校社群服务的效率。学校内部已有绝大多数部门使用模块化的网页模版定制了个性化方案，在统一的视觉风格前提下，通过颜色系统为不同内容作区隔，加强记忆点，使一般用户的浏览过程更流畅清晰。
